New plants!

New arrivals are in our garden, and just waiting to go home with you! We just got a new stock of Annie's Annuals & Perennials on our shelves, as well as a HUGE selection of air plants.

Check out some of our summer goodies:

Airplants

Have you tried out air plants yet? Easy to grow, fun, and super weird, they meet all of our requirements for an awesome plant. We have a big selection that just arrived last week - over 100 plants! Stop in and check them out!

Psoralea pinnata “Kool-Aid Bush”

This South African shrub or small tree is a a great choice to bring some height and interest to your garden. It reaches to about 12 feet in height, with dense soft needle like foliage - super cool.  It is said to bloom in it's first year, featuring bright lavender blue, sweet pea like flowers. And the name? The comes from the sweet scent of the blooms. Really fun, cool plant!

Asarina scandens ‘Sky Blue'

Asarina is a type of vine that is easy to grow, hardy, and comes in a variety of colors. The "Sky Blue" variety is one of our very favorites, though, and not one that we get in all that often! Fast growing, it reaches 8-10 feet in it's spread. It's great on a trellis, on a wall that needs coverage, or even a pot!

Crassula capitella “Red Pagoda”

This plant just looks so...geometric. Architectural. We LOVE LOVE LOVE it! Hardy, full sun, low water, great as a border plant or in a pot, and it blooms super cute white flowers in the summer time!

We, of course, have much more than this in stock right now. Come on in and check us out - we are open every day from 10am - 5pm.

This NorCal native is pretty rare - and very cool! Likes shade and can take dry conditions. Has a super cute dainty bloom, and great year round foliage!

Verbena bonariensis ‘Lollipop’

Verbena are just great plants! Easy to grow, cheerful, and colorful - a great addition to any garden. Blooms from spring through fall, drought tolerant, attracts bees and butterflies, and makes for a great cut flower. Need we say more?

Phacelia minor

We are super into phacelia's these days. Known as "Wild Canterbury', these plants are just delightful - easy to grow, fun, and they reseed!

Keckiella cordifolia “Heartleaf Penstemon”

This is one of our all time favorites! Hummingbirds love it, and it's just such a cool, unusual plant! We think of it as a 'sorta vine' - it trails up, but takes on more of a 'loose shrub' form. But man oh man, those blooms are amazing!!!

Penstemon pseudospectabilis  “Desert Beardtongue”

As a general rule of thumb, we love all things Penstemon at Johnnye Merle's, and this plant is no exception! Check out that awesome color! The plant is like that feral cat you keep trying to pet - leave it alone, and it's gonna do just fine! Handles heat and drought like a champ!

Helianthus laetiflorus “Showy Sunflower”

So, we're not trying to tell you how to live your life or anything, but we know for a fact that EVERY garden needs some sunflowers in it at one point or another! And this sunflower makes a great one: BIG, BRIGHT, and SUNNY! We've got some growing in the garden that come back year after year, making us happy!

Diascia integerrima “Hardy Twinspur”

It looks like pink candy exploding in your garden! Who doesn't want that???? Super fun, easy to grow. BUY THIS PLANT NOW!!!!

Collinsia species 'Purple' “Chinese Purple Houses”

We think this little plant is about the coolest thing ever. It doesn't look like much in a 4"pot, we gotta admit, but once you put it into the ground, LOOK AT WHAT IT DOES!!! LITTLE PURPLE HOUSES! (Like that John Mellencamp song, only not pink.) Amazing! It's a California native that bees and butterflies also love.

And you know what? WE HAVE WAY MORE THAN JUST THIS! Seriously, our nursery is kinda overflowing right now! Stop in, take home some treasures (and check out our sale section too!) and make your garden happy!

Helleborus x. sternii ‘Boughton Beauty Seedling’

Featured Plant:
Helleborus x. sternii ‘Boughton Beauty Seedling’

We are totally in love with this plant right now  - some buds are appearing on the 4" containers we have in our gardens right now, and they are amaaaazing!

The helleborus genus is actually in the Ranaculus family, a large collection that includes many well known plants. Helleborus have long been favorites among the English Garden crowd, but have gained broader popularity in recent years. They have a long history of cultivation, primarily in Europe, and were often grown for medicinal purposes; they have been found growing in runs of old monasteries and the like.

They tend to be a late winter/early spring plant for us in Southern California - perhaps adding to their allure, as nothing beats some lovely blooms at a time when the garden is looking a bit lacking.

Helleborus 'Boughton Beauty Seedling' is grown by Annie's Annuals, and is known for having green(!) flowers with an amazing dark pink flush. The foliage is equally impressive; the leaves are a very dark green with an interesting 'thorned' (they aren't actually sharp!) edge pattern. They like shaded conditions -if you are coastal you'll get away with more sun than if you are inland - and we can't recommend them enough for your shade gardens! Low to moderate water needs, plus a tough and adaptable nature makes them a great plant - we can't believe they are often so overlooked!

We have them in stock right now in 4" containers for just $5!
Come in and check them out!

Sneak peak...

A sneak peak of a few of the plants we'll be getting in this week from Annie's Annuals! Plants are slated to arrive sometime on Thursday - they'll be out and ready for you to take home Friday morning!

Babiana ringens - another cool bulb from South Africa! Crazy cool bloom, and it grows well in even sandy soil - take note, beach residents!

Calceolaria paralia ‘Pocketbook Plant’ - Wow! Super rare, big bloomer, and it's Chilean! How awesome is that??? Look at the photo extra close - yellow blooms are in fact red throated. We are way excited about this one - and it's a brand new one to the Annie's line!

Digitalis ferruginea 'Gigantea' "Rusty Foxglove" - every garden needs floxgloves, and this is one of our very favorites!

And of course, there are many many more plants in addition to these, including some more poppies and sweet peas!

We also FINALLY made ourselves a Facebook page - check it out and like us for more updates!

What else is new?

In addition to the awesome blues we posted about earlier this week, we have some other great plants that just arrive, including some very cool bulbs!

Aristea major is a striking South African native that will be sure to make your neighbor stop and stare (in a good way!) when three foot tall spikes of blue flowers are in bloom.

Ixia hybrid "Buttercup" is another stunner! Also native to South Africa, this one is super easy to grow!

Remember, all bulbs generally have a 'dormant' period, which, in simple terms, means they look dead. But they aren't! They'll come back each year, surprising you with fun and unusual blooms!

We have both of these plants in stock - and much more! - in 4" containers as of today.

More plants just for you!

A few more new plants to our garden:

Zaluzianskya capensis "Night Phlox" AKA "Midnight Candy"

I'm a little obsessed with this plant. It's growing in an old bucket right next to my front door; I LOVE it when it blooms in the evening! The smell and color are both so intoxicating! It's really one of my most favorite of favorite plants right now!

We have it in "Midnight Candy" in 4" containers right now, for about $4.50.

Lathyrus odoratus ‘Mollie Rilestone’

Everyone needs some sweet peas in their life! This is a new one for us, and we just love the old fashioned look of it - and the cute name!

All of our sweet peas are in 4" containers are priced between $3 and $4.

Have a great Monday - and happy MLK day!

More of our awesome new plants for this week!

A few more of the goodies that arrived just yesterday:

Pelargonium ‘Veronica Contreras’

This isn't your generic geranium! Check out the blooms on this plant. Best part? You'd have to really try hard to kill this thing - it's toooouuugh! We love it!

We have 'Verionica Contreras' in 4" containers for just $6 right now!

Digitalis purpurea ‘Pam’s Choice’

So, you can't have a cottage garden without at least trying to grow foxgloves. It's a rule somewhere in the garden universe. We LOVE this foxglove - look at that flower!?!? Amazing! Long blooming, too!

Get this foxglove in 4" for just $4.50!

Cotula leptinella ‘Platt’s Black’ “Dollhouse Fern”

This might be the coolest ground cover ever. How awesome is that color?!? Great plant to tuck into the edges of your garden beds, tough spots you want to cover, or even a pot. It gets pretty 'rooty' so give it room to spread, it also divides easily, so one plant will give you lots of mini plants that will grow and spread! Native to New Zealand, and everything from New Zealand is awesome, so you should totally have this in your garden! All of this for just $5! Can't beat it!

Echeveria amoena

The picture below really doesn't do this echeveria justice. We love love love echeverias, and when we unpacked this one yesterday, were were immediately in love. Yes, you can fall in love with a plant at first site. It's so cute and little and colorful! It needs to go home with you! Echeverias are great, 'diverse' plants - they work in so many garden types, and are hardy, drought tolerant, and beautiful! These are in 4" containers and like most of our succulents are priced between $4 and $6.

Happy gardening!
