New stuff - it's Friday!!!!

New plants from Annie's Annuals and Perennials arriving today, woo-hoo! Check out just a few of the plants we've got coming below...

Geranium pyrenaicum 'Bill Wallis'

You can't go wrong with these geraniums - easy to grow, they look great, and they are super hardy! Some of ours took a beating in that overnight cold snap we had a few weeks back, but they are already starting to perk back up! A great, great plant! We have them in 4" containers for just $5!

Ranunculus cortusifolius “Giant Buttercup”

This plant is like...awesome times a million! Sturdy, reliable, adorable and MEANT FOR THE SHADE?!? What more could you ask for?

Lavatera assurgentiflora “Island Mallow”

We absolutely loooove mallow, and this variety is amazing. Look at that bloom! It's tropical and cottage like all at once.  A native to the Channel Islands here in California, it does particularly well in coastal gardens, but generally grows easily anywhere - it also attracts hummingbirds, butterflies and bees!  We'll have them in 4" containers for just $5!

Scyphanthus elegans

Such a beautiful, rare vine! Click the link above to see what it looks like all 'sprawled out' - a native to Chile, this annual vine (annual vines can be great - won't take over an area for ever ever, but will often come back each season for a short run!) has an amazing bloom to it! Get one fast, 'cause we will definitely be taking at least one for our own gardens!

Tiarella wherryi "Foam Flower"

Don't you just love 'spikey' plants???? They looks so cute in a garden! This one is native to the southern United States, is non-invasive, and loves shade and well drained soil. Good stuff!

And of course, we've got way more than this!
Come see us and take home some new friends for your garden!

Happy President's Day!

Since it's President's Day, we felt it was only appropriate to talk a bit about President's who were also gardeners.

Jefferson once wrote, as the article linked above mentions, that "No occupation is so delightful to me as the culture of the earth, and no comparable to that of the garden. I am still devoted to the garden. But though and old man, I am but a young gardener."

Washington and Jefferson were among the most prominent early gardeners, but the tradition carried on through Kennedy on up to the Bush and Obama administrations, interesting stuff!

There is a really cool (well, the review of it seems cool, we haven't actually read it!) book about Presidential Gardening as well, called Founding Gardeners, check it out!

And when you are done reading, go outside! It's a little overcast right now, but should clear out later today - and with rain predicted for later this week in Orange County, today would make a PERFECT day to do some work in your own "Presidential Garden".

Our big President's Day(s) sale is coming to an end at 5pm tonight, but, until then, you can still take home some awesome plants, including our Annie's Annuals & Perennials selections,
all for 20% off!!!!

George Washington and Abe Lincoln would approve of this, we assure you!

Have a great holiday!

A new garden obsession...

Lithops!

Have you seen these before? Amazing! They are a type of succulent native to South Africa, better known as 'rock cactus' or 'rock plants'. A friend gave me one for Christmas and I've been fascinated by them ever since!

Helleborus x. sternii ‘Boughton Beauty Seedling’

Featured Plant:
Helleborus x. sternii ‘Boughton Beauty Seedling’

We are totally in love with this plant right now  - some buds are appearing on the 4" containers we have in our gardens right now, and they are amaaaazing!

The helleborus genus is actually in the Ranaculus family, a large collection that includes many well known plants. Helleborus have long been favorites among the English Garden crowd, but have gained broader popularity in recent years. They have a long history of cultivation, primarily in Europe, and were often grown for medicinal purposes; they have been found growing in runs of old monasteries and the like.

They tend to be a late winter/early spring plant for us in Southern California - perhaps adding to their allure, as nothing beats some lovely blooms at a time when the garden is looking a bit lacking.

Helleborus 'Boughton Beauty Seedling' is grown by Annie's Annuals, and is known for having green(!) flowers with an amazing dark pink flush. The foliage is equally impressive; the leaves are a very dark green with an interesting 'thorned' (they aren't actually sharp!) edge pattern. They like shaded conditions -if you are coastal you'll get away with more sun than if you are inland - and we can't recommend them enough for your shade gardens! Low to moderate water needs, plus a tough and adaptable nature makes them a great plant - we can't believe they are often so overlooked!

We have them in stock right now in 4" containers for just $5!
Come in and check them out!

Garden upcycling

Some more fun ideas on garden 'upcycling' from the wild world of Pinterest...

Great idea, and old tackle/tool boxes are super easy to find!

Put your old file drawers to good use!

Thought this was SUPER COOL! And we always have lots of wagon wheels at Country Roads!

Cinder block CAN look cool! And it's super cheap...

Great idea for a patio or balcony...

More drawers! Easy to do!

Hopefully some of these inspired you to take on a new project this week!

New plants and the rain is gone - come see us!

We got some really really cool new plants in yesterday! We already highlighted a few of them on our blog this week, but here are a few more:

Artichoke "Carciofo Romanesco" - thorn free and delicious with a nutty flavor, this artichoke has been in cultivation since around 1400! That's an antique for you! Plus, even if you don't like to eat artichoke 1. your friends probably do and 2. they look super cool if you let them go to bloom too!

Delosperma nubigenum "Hardy Yellow Ice Plant" - look, we know iceplant doesn't sound all that exciting, and immediately evokes the 'side of the freeway' picture. Totally NOT true in this case though - we have this one growing in our gardens and LOVE it! Drought hardy and tough as nails, it makes a GREAT ground cover for your tough spots!

Delphinium "Double Innocence" - all gardens need delphinium, and all gardens should have a few white delphinium in their mix. Big, tough, easy to grow. Enough said.  Get one!

We also have lots of poppies - both papavers and California poppies in shades like red, white, apricot and rose! - linaria, sweet peas, and much much more! Most of our plants are between $3 and $5 - a great deal for some great plants! Come see us soon!
